Many of the things we take for granted today were, not so long ago, the stuff of fanciful science fiction. Reality changes and morphs as we progress and discover new ways to interact with the world and each other. This concept of a new reality – an upgraded reality – is at the center of the work being done at NTT Research, who are developing advanced technologies that promote positive change for humankind. Just how will that look – and what does it mean for businesses in 2023?

Intelligent innovation connects clients and partners across NTT to harness our R&D investments and the power of our people. In pursuing a society in which people achieve sustainable development and recognize diverse values, we need to realize a smart world in which there is a dramatic change in people’s lives and the relationship between people and technology – a world in which everything is interconnected. Connection for us means people, systems and data. A connected society is inherently a better society. This is what NTT R&D is working towards every day.

Future societies that leverage technology to its fullest, and use those innovations to improve quality of life for all, need robust planning that’s rooted in research and data. As part of a coalition of business, government, and academic leaders and together with ESI ThoughtLab and other partners, NTT set out to provide an evidence-based roadmap to urban resilience and sustainability and to open a valuable dialogue on the future of cities. Here, we look at some of the results from the Smart City Solutions for a Riskier World research initiative, exploring how 167 cities – with diverse populations and economies – use smart innovation and public-private partnerships to drive results.

The world is changing fast and many start-up companies are recognizing that they can make the world a better place through technology. Banks are also being forced into this space by their investors and customers, and can equally reinvent their businesses to leverage technology and finance for future returns to all stakeholders – not just shareholders. Technologist and bestselling author Chris Skinner asks: where would you rather be?

To meet the twin goals of increasing computing power and decreasing the environmental impact, NTT has created an Innovative Optical Wireless Network, or IOWN. Based on the core components of green infrastructure (an all-photonics network), a cognitive computing layer which connects everything, and digital twin technology to enable predictions, the IOWN initiative aims to actualize the new infrastructure that will allow for a green internet, and a sustainable future.

The Covid-19 pandemic has changed everything about how we communicate and congregate in social spaces. Relying heavily on remote connection makes high-speed and broad bandwidth, with low costs and immediate use, high in demand. NTT is collaborating with partners and using All-Photonics Network (APN) technology to research and develop on-demand photonic multipoint connection technology. Hirotaka Yoshioka and his colleagues from NTT’s Network Service Systems Laboratories set out how this new technology is transcending geographical boundaries to connect the world.

Rather than trying to ‘do’ innovation – the first challenge of which is understanding the various ways in which the word is used – leaders should instead test hypotheses through R&D. Mark Masterson, Head of Research & Development at NTT DATA UK, outlines how we better understand the meaning of innovation, its different business contexts, and how we can all generate (and execute) better ideas.
